We hired a taxi for 2 hours from the cruise terminal. It’s a very common practice to see dozen’s of taxis lined up to pick up cruise passengers. We got lucky with our driver, he was entertaining and shared amusing stories of his island home. He drove us up the mountain to Paleokastritsa Monastery stopping for some amazing photo opportunities along the way.
This peaceful Byzantine monastery dates back to the 13th century. The taxi driver was an excellent tour guide and even pointed out a few of his “cousins” grazing on the hillsides – or so he said. He had a very strange sense of humor but we enjoyed it.
We also made a stop at the Empress Sissi’s Achilleon palace. Built on top of a mountain overlooking the sea surrounded by classic gardens with lots of statues. If you saw James Bond For Your Eyes Only it will look familiar.
I always wanted to be a classic Greek statue.
