Day Two – The city of Como. Lots of visitors rave about the Lake Como villages of Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio but the city of Como is gorgeous and worth spending a day exploring. It’s more of a city than the other villages surrounding the lake, but this also means it has more great restaurants and shopping. We took the funicular up to the city of Brunate and to get an amazing bird’s eye view of Como and surrounding towns.
The funicular took less than 10 minutes and at the top, we saw a breathtaking view of Como.
Tip: If you want to get some great photos be the first in line to sit at the bottom of the funicular and you’ll be able to capture some amazing shots of the steep ride up or down.
When we got back to the city of Como we visited the splendid 15th-century gothic Duomo. For such a small town I was surprised by its impressive size and lavish beauty.
We also walked along the lovely lakeside promenade including a stroll around the breakwater to admire the sculptural piece called “Life Electric” in honor of Alessandro Volta the inventor of the battery, who was born in Como.
We wandered around the medieval city center and its narrow stone lanes trying to decide which charming cafe we were going to have lunch at.
While waiting for the ferry we had an amazing gelato and watched the local children play in the fountain on the dock.
So here are my 5 suggestions to do in Como – all of them can easily be accomplished in one day without being rushed and still have time to treat yourself to a relaxed lunch at an outdoor cafe and get a tasty gelato – or two.
