Moving from Texas it’s been interesting to observe how Utah celebrate Memorial Day. The week before the holiday the garden, grocery, and hardware stores are stocked with mums and flower arrangements. I thought wow every family must have a veteran who died serving our country. But no, Memorial Day has a different meaning in Utah. It is promoted as a day to remember ALL loved ones who have past on. The cemeteries are decorated with thousands of flowers. Almost every grave has multiple flowers all from family members.
Yes, it’s lovely to honor and remember our ancestors who passed but I’m still not sure that this is the right holiday. Putting aside my reservations of who this day should be commemorating it is an impressive site to see all the graves decorated with an abundance of flowers. Of course, fallen veterans are also honored with flowers and flags. In this Cemetery, hundreds of crosses with veterans names are placed on display by local scout troops.
